Bhubaneswar: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the Railways to pay a compensation of Rs25, 000 to a divyang who was assault by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel.
Acting on a petition filed by lawyer and human rights activist Prabir Kumar Das, the acting chairperson of OHRC Justice Bira Kishore Mishra directed the Ministry of Railways to pay compensation of Rs 25, 000 to the differently abled person Suresh Rao – a resident of Chanmara under Chaibasa police limits in Jharkhand. The Commission has directed the concerned officials to comply with the order within three months.
Notably, Rao was assaulted by RPF personnel at Balasore railway station in January this year. The men in uniform suspected him to have stolen a mobile phone and tried to recover from him. When the divyang denied the charges, he was beaten up.
The incident was recorded on a mobile phone by a bystander.
