Bhubaneswar, Nov 21:
The Odisha government today made it official that Bhubaneswar will be the venue for the proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the state.
The department of Employment, Technical Education & Training of the state government today wrote letters to the Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development and IIM Kolkata (the mentor for the proposed IIM in Odisha) in this regard, said official sources.
The state government, in its letters, has mentioned two possible sites on the outskirts of the capital city – one being at Gothapatna near the IIIT and the other near the campus of IIT Bhubaneswar at Argul.
In its letter to the Union HRD ministry, the department has requested for sending the site selection committee to Bhubaneswar at the earliest to finalize any one of the sites identified by the state government for the permanent venue of the premier institute in the state.
The site selection committee for the proposed IIM is expected here within a week to finalize on one out of the two sites selected by the state government.
The state government has also finalized Bhubaneswar as the venue for the temporary campus of the proposed IIM. The Centre a few days back had also wanted to know from the state government as to where it was going to house the IIM temporarily in view of the institute admitting students from the 2015 academic year.
Both the sites identified by the state government meet the central guideline – reachable from an airport within one hour, 200 acres of litigation free land and connected by super fast trains.
The government was under tremendous political pressure from locating the proposed IIM in different locations on the state prominent among them being Sambalpur and Brahmapur. Both the towns had observed bandhs in support of their demands.
The Centre’s guideline finally bailed out the state government from a difficult situation.
