New Delhi, Aug 4:
Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti today pulled up Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal over its ongoing state-wide agitation on the Mahanadi issue and alleged that the party is doing so for political gains.
“Both governments have mutually decided about the steps that need to be taken to address the issue. After the officials of both governments discussed the issue and agreed on the future course of action, BJD’s agitation now makes it clear that they do not have any connection with the issue. Neither do they want a solution to it,” said Uma speaking to reporters today.
She further condemned the BJD for hyping the issue up.
“They just want to do politics. I assure you that there will be talks and a solution will come up. There will not be any injustice to Odisha. However, if they (BJD) have made up their mind to not understand the issue and make noise instead, I condemn it,” she added.
BJD, on the other hand, criticized the Minister for her statement.
“Chhattisgarh Government should have followed the rules, yet they didn’t. They should at least halt the construction of the projects now, however, that is not happening either. This is a crucial issue which is connected with the lives of the people of Odisha and we are trying to take it to the public in a democratic way. There is nothing wrong in it. The statement of the Minister is unfortunate,” said BJD spokesperson Sashi Bhusan Behera.
It may be mentioned here that Biju Janata Dal has been staging demonstrations across the state to protest against construction of projects by Chhattisgarh Government on the upper catchment on Mahanadi. The party argues that the projects would partially block the water coming to Hirakud dam and hence affect the irrigation and electricity generation in the state.
