Odisha youth drowns in pond in bid to extinguish fire, locals block road

Puri: In an unfortunate incident, a youth drowned in a pond at Arala village under Chandanpur police limits of Odisha’s Puri district last night while he was trying to fetch water from the pond in a bid to extinguish fire which had broken out in a house of the village.

Alleging that fire tenders reached the spot late after being informed about the fire mishap, irate locals this morning blocked Chandanpur-Nirakarpur road by burning tyres and placing the body on road. They demanded compensation for the family of Naba Pradhan (22), the deceased.

According to reports, house of one Rabi Jena in the village was last night set on fire by some unidentified miscreants. In an attempt to douse the flames along with villagers, Naba Pradhan went to the pond. However, he slipped into the water body and drowned.

While the fire mishap took place around 11 pm, the villagers alleged that fire personnel reached there around 2 pm which led to resentment among the locals.

On being informed about the road blockade, senior police officials and local Tehsildar reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
