In a shocking incident, district legal aid authority rescued a 45-year old mentally ill woman who had been locked up in a room in Odisha’s Millennium City of Cuttack since past 12 years.
The woman has been identified as Khadija Mulla from Mission Road area of Buxi Bazaar in Cuttack. She has been suffering from mental disorder.
The parents of the woman are dead leaving the mentally sick woman in the care of her two borthers. Unable to afford the medication, her two brothers, who run an eyewear shop in the town, had locked her up in a closed room.
They were, however, had been providing her food and clothes.
After coming to know about Khadija, legal aid authority member Kalyani Sahani visited her and got her admitted to the Mental Health Institute (MHI) of the SCB Medical College and Hospital with the help of secretary Soumyak Patra and District Social Welfare Officer. She is now in Bed No 25 of the institute and her treatment has begun.
Another of their sisters,Hafsa Mulla, who is also suffering from the same disease and had left the house, has now been traced and admitted to the Mental Health Institute in SCB Medical College.
Funding the medication, however, remains a concern and her brother Yusuf Ahmed Mulla has sought help from donors.
