Bhubaneswar, Feb 11:
Commissionerate police have begun investigation into the alleged suicide of a research scholar of the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) during a video call with her friend late on Tuesday night in Odisha capital.
The Mancheswar police have summoned Chirantan Samantaray, friend of the 34-year-old deceased woman identified as Subhalaxmi Acharya, for questioning as he was the first person to inform the local police about the incident over phone from Nagpur, sources said today.
Samantaray, claiming to be a friend of Subhalaxmi, called up Mancheswar police station on Tuesday night at around 11.30 and told that his friend attempted suicide by hanging herself while she was on a video call with him.
Following this, the Mancheswar police rushed to the house on the second floor of the building between 11.30 pm and midnight and broke into the house. The cops found the woman hanging from a ceiling fan with her mobile phone kept upright at a distance near a window.
The woman separated from her husband was living in a rented house at Bhagwat Sandhan Phase-II near Rasulgarh under Mancheswar police station limits in the capital city.
The cops rushed her to Capital Hospital hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival. The body was sent for post-mortem and handed over to the family members on Wednesday.
It may be mentioned that the deceased was married since past 11 years. However, she was separated from her husband four years ago over marital discord. Post her MTech, she was working as a senior project fellow in IMMT since March 2013.
