A devotional singer, working with state-owned Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (OMFED) here, has proved to be an angel for a minor boy from Mayurbhanj district who has been ailing since last 15 years.

Besides providing financial assistance to the boy’s family, the vocalist, Prashant Kumar Behera, has also offered to take care of the latter’s upbringing, after meeting his parents at their hometown of Rairangpur.

“I was saddened by the report published in ‘Sambad’ about the parents of Litun seeking euthanasia for their ailing 15-year-old boy. My son—Munu—is also bed-ridden since last 13 years. I haven’t broken down as Lord Jagannath has given me the strength to lead a peaceful life even in difficult times,” Prashant said.

Comparing his son with Lord Jagannath, Prashant said: “Like the rituals of the Lord, we too offer food and change clothes of our son all through the day.”

Referring to Litun’s parents’ application to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking euthanasia, Prashant advised the couple to take this out of their mind and treat their differently-abled son with compassion and affection.

He has given a cheque, through Sambad, to the parents of Litun for his treatment.

Notably, Litun had ambulatory issues since birth due to which his mobility was severely restricted; he was dependent on others even for performing daily chores. The villagers had raised Rs 40, 000 from donations to help the minor in his treatment. He was taken to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (Sishu Bhavan) in Cuttack where the doctors diagnosed him as having birth paralysis which needs an expensive surgery.

Crest-fallen by this, the parents returned to their village. Litun’s father–Maheswar Dey– is a street vendor and hails from Hatabadada village under Rairangpur area in Mayurbhanj district.

Considering their financial condition, the hapless parents had written a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his permission for euthanasia for this 15-year-old son who has been paralysed since birth.
