Odisha villagers block NH over jumbo menace

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Athgarh, Oct 25:

Fed up with the menace of wild elephants in the area over a protracted period, villagers of Kuspangi village under Athgarh block in Odisha’s Cuttack district today blocked the National Highway-55 protesting against Forest department’s alleged inaction in driving away the herd.

Vehicles in large numbers have been stranded on both sides of the National Highway. On being informed, local police reached the spot and tried to persuade protestors to lift the blockade, reports said.

Local sources said wild elephants from the Athgarh forest range had strayed into Kusupangi village. While one person has been injured in elephant attack in the village, the herd has killed a bullock, the sources added.

The blockade was continuing at the time of filing of this report as police had failed to persuade the protesting villagers from vacating the blockade.
