Bhubaneswar, Feb 28:
It was no less a nightmarish experience for the snake that was chasing its prey and got trapped in a discarded beer can.
The cobra got a new lease of life after it was rescued by members of Snake Helpline from Nayahat near Kakatpur in Odisha’s Puri district. The serpent was rushed to the Veterinary College of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) where veterinarians performed a minor operation spanning over half-an-hour.
“The snake was trapped inside a beer can due to which it sustained injuries in the process of trying to get out of it. We took extra caution to rip the can apart and take it out. The snake had sustained injuries on the posterior part of the body. We have applied medicines and administered injectables for faster recovery. We expect it to be sent to the wild in a day or two,” Indramani Nath, senior veterinary doctor involved in the operation said.
The founder member of Snake Helpline Subhendu Mallik has appealed to people to crush the disposables after use as snakes are getting stuck inside these containers in search of food.
“I appeal to the people to dispose the cans and bottles properly so that snakes are not trapped in it. The snake got treatment here and will be released to the forest tomorrow,” Subhendu Mallik said.
It may be recalled that a similar incident had happened last week when a snake was trapped in a flavoured milk can.
