Odisha to provide rice allowance to disabled persons

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Nov 23:

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today ordered for providing Rs 200 as ‘rice allowance’ per month to disabled persons in the state in lieu of the subsidized rice provided to them.

The state government took the decision to provide rice allowance since it was not possible to provide subsidized rice to disabled persons under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) implemented by the Central government, said an official release.

Disabled persons in the state will receive their rice allowance along with their monthly pension with retrospective effect from October this year, the release added.

Persons with more than 60% disability will be eligible for receiving the allowance. The move will benefit two lakh beneficiaries in the state, the release said.

Notably, the state government was providing additional 10 kg of rice a month to disabled persons at a subsidized price of Re 1 a kilo under the Rice for Disabled Person scheme.
