By all accounts this is one of the best Dussehra celebrations in Odisha in recent years. Good weather, the promise of a good crop and the fact that it is taking place at the start of the month have added to the festive mood.
Heavy rains, flood and even cyclonic storms have marred puja festivities in Odisha in the past. In 2012 it was heavy rain and in 2013 it was cyclone Phailin that had marred the Puja.
According to an estimate the total volume of business this puja season would touch Rs 5000 crore. A big slice of the business has gone to the auto industry, which has mopped up nearly Rs 1000 crore. According to a survey, as many as 4300 four wheelers and 75,000 two wheelers have been sold in Odisha over the last two weeks. Besides,car dealers have been able to sell nearly 4000 old / pre-owned cars.
With attractive discount offers, the dealers of electronic goods and hime appliances have made brisk business. People have splurged money on luxury items, jewellery and of course garments.
According to an estimate, nearly 4000 puja pandals have come up across the state including 167 in Bhubaneswar, 158 in Cuttack, 107 in Rourkela, 81 in Baleswar, 57 in Sambalpur and 40 in Brahmapur.
