Kendrapara: A youth, who was yesterday arrested in a mobile phone theft case, escaped from police station last night and allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

The deceased has been identified as Abinash Paital of Marshaghai area in the district.

According to reports, Abinash was arrested by Mahakalapada police yesterday around 11 am and brough to the police station for his alleged involvement in stealing mobile phone.

Last night around 10 pm, the accused fled from the police station while he had gone to attend nature’s call.

Hours after searching for him, police found his body in a hanging state at the house of a person near the police station.

Tension erupted in the area following the death as irate locals blocked Jambu-Marshaghai road holding police responsible for the youth’s suicide. They alleged that police excess forced him to take the extreme step.

Later in the day, DGP Rajendra Prasad Sharma suspended Mahakalapada police station IIC Shyamaghana Behera on charge of dereliction of duty.
