A school teacher, who had allegedly forced his students to work on his cotton field at a village in Odisha’s Rayagada district, was placed under suspension by the district administration today.
According to reports, Baburao Himirika, assistant teacher of Unnita Primary School at Matikana village under Rayagada block had engaged 17 students including 14 girl students of the school since Sunday last to pluck cotton from the cotton plants he had grown in his field while assuring them to pay them Rs 100 as daily wage.
Following a tip-off, the Child Welfare Committee, Rayagada, in association with the Chandili police, rushed to the village and rescued the school children from the field yesterday.
The rescued school children were later handed over to their family members.
Following the incident, district collector Sashibhusan Padhi later asked the District Education Officer to submit a report about the incident.
Acting on the report of the DEO, the collector placed Himirika under suspension.
Meanwhile, the police and the District Labour Office have begun investigation into the incident, reports said.
