The official sunstroke death toll in Odisha mounted to 22 on Friday with the Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) office confirming the sunstroke death of one person in Kendrapara district.
The unofficial death figure, however, is now over 100.
Mayurbhanj and Kendrapara districts have accounted for four sunstroke deaths each while it is three in Balangir district, two each in Cuttack, Jajpur and Keonjhar and one death each in Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal and Khurda districts, sources in the SRC office said.
The searing heatwave which has been tormenting Odisha for the last three weeks saw seven districts in the state recording temperature levels in excess of 44 degree Celsius on Friday.
The Met office has warned that heatwave conditions would prevail in the interior areas of the state while thundersqualls and norwesters may occur at a few places on Saturday.
