Puri: The Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court in Puri today awarded 6-year jail term to RTI activist Jayant Das in 2012 cyber crime case.
Apart from sentencing the accused to six years in jail, the court slapped him with Rs 8,000 as fine amount in the case.
Jayant was accused of sending obscene messages to a journalist’s wife from a fake account.
Das was convicted for sending indecnt messgae by opening a fake Facebook account in the name of a journalist.
“When I was working for ‘Prajatantra’, an Odia daily, I did a story on him. After that, he (Das) started sending some porn pictures to people by creating a fake Facebook account in my name,” said Biswajit Patnaik, the complainant.
A case was registered in this regard with Cyber cell of Crime Branch in 2012.
The accused was arrested under section 292, 465, 469, 500 of the Indian Penal Code and 66(C) and 67 (a) of the Information Technology Act.
Sources said the activist will move higher court challenging the verdict.
