Odisha rights body seeks report on Dharmasala custodial death

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought report from IGP (Central Range) on alleged custodial death of an accused in Jajpur district two days ago.

Acting on a petition filed by rights activist and lawyer Prabir Kumar Das, the Commission sought a report from IG (Central Range) on the alleged custodial death of Gayadhar Tarai at Dharmasala police station on Saturday asking it to submit the report within three weeks.

The deceased was arrested on that day in connection with a bomb attack case. However, he was admitted to Dharmasala Community Health Centre (CHC) for abdomen pain. But the doctor declared him dead on arrival. The kin alleged custodial torture to be the reason behind Gayadhar’s death.

Following the incident, the petitioner moved the OHRC seeking an independent enquiry, appropriate action against the police personnel found guilty and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased.

Describing it as a matter of violation of human rights and the right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, Das prayed for the Commission’s intervention.

Acting Chairperson Justice Bira Kishore Mishra ordered the IG, Central Range to submit his report within three weeks.
