Odisha Rights body seeks report on corpse being carried on rickshaw

Odisha State Human Rights Commission today took a suo motu cognisance of the report of a corpse being carried on a trolley rickshaw for cremation here yesterday and sought a report from the civic authorities within a month.

The Commission sought a report from the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Krishan Kumar within four weeks

The deceased identified as Kalu Nayak, a resident of Badatota village in Jatni in Khurda district, died following a prolonged illness following which he was taken to Capital Hospital here for post-mortem.

Later in the day, the body was transported in a trolley rickshaw to Satya Nagar crematorium where he was consigned to flames.

Notably, the respective police stations here send the unclaimed bodies for post mortem and subsequently for cremation in trolley rickshaws.

After the matter was reported in the regional media yesterday, the incident evoked sharp reactions among the denizens calling for a dignified treatment to the unattended bodies.

When contacted, the BMC Mayor Anant Narayan Jena said that the Corporation would make proper arrangements for carrying the bodies and seek funds for streamlining the process.
