Bhubaneswar, June 28:
Expressing grave concern over the announcement of the Puri Gobardhan Peeth Swami Nischalananda Saraswati that he would not climb the chariots during Rath Yatra, the state BJP today urged the Odisha government to immediately lift restrictions, preventing the seer’s disciples from climbing chariots, to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
“The restrictions on the Shankaracharya’s chariot visit laid down by the state government is utterly deplorable and painful. The state government should lift such restrictions with immediate effect. If the seer does not perform the customary rituals on the chariots, it will create a very bad precedent,” senior BJP leader and former minister Biswabhusan Harichandan in a release here this evening.
The Shankaracharya, in a press briefing earlier in the day, had made it clear that he would not perform the customary rituals on the chariots as the the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has barred his disciples from climbing the chariots.
