Police during raids on the house of former Congress MLA Ramesh Jena at Gambhariguda under Patapur police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district today seized two revolvers and some incriminating documents, said IG, Southern Range, Amitabh Thakur at a joint press conference with Berhampur SP Sarthak Sarangi here.

Briefing on the progress of investigations in cases against Jena, Thakur said: “We have confronted him with facts and are interrogating him, he has confessed of his involvement in many cases. We would like to request the public through you if anyone has any complaint against Ramesh Jena, he/she can come forward and lodge it with the police without fear.”

“Two persons have lodged FIRs against Jena after his arrest. They claimed that till date they had not lodged complaints against Jena out of fear. If during the course of interrogation the situation so demands we will seek further remand of Jena after the five day remand period is over,” the Southern Range IG said.

“Ramesh Jena during interrogation has confessed to have invested money earned through extortion and tender fixing in real estate, sand quarry business and gutkha business. Now many people who were scared of Jena are coming forward with their complaints after his arrest. We are now sure that Jena and his men were behind the gun running racket in this area,” informed Berhampur SP Sarthak Sarangi.

Sarangi said the police has formed two teams-one is investigating where he has invested his ill-gotten money and other is investigating involvement of him and his associates in crime. He said the police has seized about 25-30 bank accounts of Jena and his relatives.

Investigations till date have revealed that he has mainly invested his ill-got money in liquor, gutkha, sand and real estate businesses, he added.

“Jena was having 27 cases against him in Berhampur we have registered three cases against him in 2016 making a total of 30 cases. This apart he has cases against him in Bhubaneswar and Purusottampur,” the SP said.
