Jagatsinghpur/Bhubaneswar: Police today successfully solved the sensational case of rape and murder of a minor girl in Gada Harishpur village under Erasama police limits in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district by arresting the prime accused from Cuttack city.
According to reports, the accused identified as Kalia alias Kali Pada alias Laba Manna (25) son of Achinta Manna of the same village as that of the victim was arrested from Badambadi bus stand in Cuttack city this evening while he was trying to escape. He has confessed to the crime before the police during interrogation. He is being further interrogated by the police.
Notably, a nine-year-old minor girl of Gada Harishpur had gone missing from her house yesterday. After a futile search by her parents last evening, her nude body with palpable signs of sexual assault was found by villagers today in the morning from a cashew plantation just 300 mts away from her house.
The discovery of the body of the victim from the plantation led to a hue and cry among the locals in the area.
Following the sighting of the victim’s body, her father lodged a written report with the Erasama police at 10.30 am and a case was registered under sections 376, 302 of the IPC and section 4 of POCSO Act.
Taking it as a challenge, police had launched a manhunt for the suspect with the help of police dog, scientific team and special squad. Separate teams monitored by senior police officers were formed for investigation and arrest of the suspect.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while expressing deep concern over the rape and murder of the minor announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the victim on compassionate grounds.
Condemning the incident, the Chief Minister ordered for immediate arrest and exemplary action against the culprits.
The Chief Minister has expressed his deepest sympathies for the victim’s family.
