Bhubaneswar, Apr 7:
Twin city Commissionerate police intends to enforce penalty for bursting fire crackers in the ‘no cracker zone’ around Odisha’s lone airport in Bhubaneswar.
It may be noted that bursting of firecrackers in close proximity of the airport might lead to aviation accidents. Even though the ‘no cracker zone’ has been announced since quite some time now, people continue to burst crackers within the prohibited area.
The Airport authorities had earlier written to the local administration and the police to enforce the no cracker zone under four police station limits of the city: Khandagiri, Airfield, Lingaraj and Capital police stations.
The issue was also taken up recently by airport authorities in a meeting with the Chief Secretary, where the additional DCP claimed he did not have a written order on the subject yet.
The airport authorities later wrote a letter to the commissionerate police asking them to tighten patrolling in the ‘no cracker zone’ which lies under the above mentioned four police station limits, create awareness against usage of firecrackers, ensure that rockets are not fired in any condition, ban firecracker while issuing marriage procession licenses and keep an undertaking from the applicants on the same and deny licenses for temporary firecracker shops during occasions such as Diwali.
“It is not possible to ban firecrackers under four police station limits. We have asked the airport authorities to let us know the specific the distance from the airport where the ban needs to be imposed. This will help us in patrolling. We will also ask people not to use firecrackers and penalize those who do not obey the order,” said commissionerate police DCP Satyabrata Bhoi.
