Odisha police arrest eatery owner for beating up students

Rourkela, July 22:

Police today arrested the road side eatery owner, Tengda Ekka who had allegedly beaten up three students of Model Residential School at Laing of Odisha’s Sundargarh  district, suspecting them of stealing eggs on Sunday, police sources said.

One of the students, who was seriously injured and was admitted to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), was shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) run by Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) here for better treatment after his condition deteriorated. Apart from sustaining other injuries, the boy Saurav Bara, a class X student, has sustained a fracture in one of his hands, sources said.

An Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) official told reporters here that the entire cost of treatment of the student will be borne by the ITDA. A teacher of the school is with the injured student to look after him in the hospital, he said adding the police is investigating the matter.

According to reports, the students of Model Residential School at Laing were on a sightseeing trip to the Mandira dam under Kansbahal police limits on Sunday accompanied by their teachers. While returning from the sightseeing trip, some students went to a nearby eatery to drink water. However, the owner of the eatery suspecting three boys to have stolen eggs from his shop and beat them up mercilessly with a stick.

One of the teachers who had accompanied the students had lodged a complaint with the Kansbahal police station after taking the injured students to a hospital.

The other two students were discharged from the hospital yesterday after being administered first aid.
