Odisha unit of Congress today said that it will field candidates in 854 zilla parishad zones in the upcoming panchayat polls scheduled to be held in February 2017.


PCC President Prasad Harichandan said so while addressing the press after the ‘Sankalp Samavesh’ of its block and district level presidents along with state level office bearers held in Bhubaneswar today.

The meeting was held to fine tune its strategy for the upcoming panchayat polls. The party decided to undertake a massive door-to-door campaign to reach out to the voters before the polls.

Addressing the gathering, Harichandan explained the importance of the polls for the party and assured the office bearers that the vacant organisational posts would be filled up beforehand.

“Today we decided that a door-to-door campaign will be launched to take the message of Congress to the people before the upcoming panchayat polls. This will help the local leaders connect with the mass. We have appointed 30 senior leaders in 30 districts and another 314 leaders in as many blocks of the state to supervise the poll preparations,” said Harichandan.

“Besides, we have formed the Panchayat Election Committee and Panchayat Election Manifesto Committee as recommended by AICC President Sonia Gandhi. Congress will field candidates in 854 zilla parishad zones and form alliances will like-minded parties at local level – if necessary,” he added.

According to a press notification issued by the party after the meeting, the party is in final stages of formation of 6800 gram panchayat task forces and the drill is likely to be completed by the end of next month. In addition, it will form booth committees at 87,000 wards.

Congress will focus on issues of farmers, rising unemployment, rights of women and tribals in its poll agenda.
