Bhubaneswar, Jun 23:
Odisha Government has approved proposals from the districts to form 500-600 new panchayats in the state. A formal notification on this context would be issued soon, said Panchayati Raj Minister Arun Sahoo speaking to reporters today.
“According to the proposals, we would have 500-600 more panchayats. The new panchayats would go to polls during the upcoming panchayat polls in 2017,” said Minister Sahoo.
The government would submit the records pertaining to the boundary, ward details and reservation status of the panchayats to the State Election Commission (SEC) within a month, said Panchayati Raj Secretary Deo Ranjan Singh.
It may be noted here that the Odisha Cabinet on June 5 approved a proposal to amend ‘The Orissa Grama Panchayat Act’ that will facilitate the creation of 500 new panchayats in the state. The new panchayats are being created in keeping with the promise made by the BJD in its 2014 poll manifesto to create a panchayat for every 1,000 population.
