Koraput, Feb 10:
The sessions court on Monday granted bail to the suspended headmaster and superintendent of a sevashram (residential) school at Umuri village under Jeypore block of Odisha’s Koraput district, who were arrested on Sunday following the delivery of a baby by a Class VI girl student at the school on February 4.
“The court granted bail with Rs 10,000 surety each,” said Muna Singhlal, counsel for the headmaster and the hostel superintendent.
The 12-year-old girl and her infant son have been admitted to Koraput district headquarters hospital. While the child has been admitted to the special new-born care unit (SNUC), the mother is undergoing treatment in the maternity ward.
“We have kept the underweight child weighing 1,585 grams under observation. We hope the child will gain weight in the next week,” said Chaya Kanta Gouda, paediatrician at the hospital.
The tribal girl was admitted to the school last year.
Though the girl had delivered the baby in the hostel on February 4, the school authorities, in an attempt to suppress the matter, later sent her to her home without informing the administration.
The matter came to light on Saturday evening after the district collector received a complaint from Welfare Extension Officer of Jeypore and ordered an inquiry.
Police later arrested the headmaster Kailash Charan Brahma and hostel Superintendent Sabita Guru on Sunday and forwarded them to the court.
Meanwhile, police are yet to arrest the accused who had raped the minor girl in her village.
“Police are on the lookout for the absconding accused,” said Jeypore SDPO Rajendra Senapati.
