Odisha: Minor boy critical after iron rod pierces into his chest

Keonjhar: A minor boy suffered critical injury after an iron rod pierced into his chest while playing near his house at Dimbo village under Town police limits here in the district yesterday.

The victim identified as Chandan Mahakud (11), elder son of Nanda Kishore Mahakud, who is an autorickshaw driver, was shifted to the SCB Medical College & Hospital in critical condition.

The incident took place when Chandan was playing with a 4-5-ft-long iron rod near his home at around 5.00 pm on Sunday.

According to reports, the boy accidentally fell on the iron rod that pierced into his chest. His parents came out of the house and found their son suffering from immense pain. They immediately rushed him to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a critical condition.

Following primary treatment, he was later referred to the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack.

“The incident occurred while Chandan was playing with his younger sibling holding an iron rod near the house. We came to know about it after our youngest son informed us,” said Chandan’s mother.

The Keonjhar hospital doctors suggested us to shift our son to Cuttack citing lack of equipment at the hospital. However, the doctors at the SCB Hospital have assured us to remove the iron rod, she added.

Notably, Nanda Kishore hails from Baiganpal village under Ghatagaon police limits in Keonjhar district. He along with his family has been residing at Dimbo village for a long time.

Last year, a similar kind of incident was reported from Dhangadadiha village near Ghatagaon in Keonjhar district where a thick and long tree branch got lodged in the neck of a minor boy after he fell off a blackberry tree. It was removed from his neck following a successful surgery by a team of doctors at the SCB.
