Bhubaneswar, Jul 25:
Students of Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), a unit of Siksha O Anusandhan (SOA) university which was closed sine die after tension over the suicide of a first year student yesterday, today met Governor of Odisha Dr SC Jamir and submitted a memorandum to him demanding proper investigation of the incident and compensation to the family of the deceased student.
IMS was closed sine die yesterday after tension prevailed in the campus for hours over the death of a student who was found hanging in his hostel room in the morning.
Manish Dhal, a first year MBBS student was found hanging from the ceiling in his room in Hostel No 1 of IMS.
SOA authorities have declared the college closed sine die and directed borders to vacate their hostels immediately after angry students went on a rampage breaking glass panes and staging a dharna in the campus for over four hours.
Hundreds of first-year MBBS students held a protest in front of Hostel-1 demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the SOA university.
Later, the students ransacked the hostel properties after failing to get their demands fulfilled.
Manish’s friends say there was no response from him when they knocked on his door to call him to go to the class this morning. They then entered the room by breaking open the lock of the door and found him hanging from the ceiling.
“They informed other students and hostel warden, who rushed to the spot. Police was also informed,” a senior police official said.
He was rushed to the casualty in SUM hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“Manish was known to be a good student and his colleagues always found him friendly and active. He had informed me earlier that the college authorities had barred him from the semester examination because of poor attendance. He was disturbed for the last few days and might have taken this extreme step in a state of depression,” said one of his friends on the condition of anonymity.
Police are probing the incident.
