Malkangiri, Dec 12:
A young couple who had eloped from their village in Malkangiri district to Andhra Pradesh, were pressurized to return home, beaten up badly, tied up and thrown into the river to die, allegedly under the diktat of a tribal khap panchayat in Odisha.
The spine chilling incident came to light after 8 days after the bodies were fished out in the river banks of Chhattisgarh. The couple bodies have multiple injury marks on their bodies.
The victims, Muni Madhi and Muka Madhi, natives of Mekhaguda village, were distantly related uncle and niece and belong to the tribal Madhi community, here such a relationship is taboo.
After the villagers objected to their relationship they had eloped to Andhra Pradesh. After staying for a few months in Andhra Pradesh, they had returned to their village due to pressure from the village head.
After their return a village panchayat had been called to punish the couple. The punishment – death – had already been decided. Both the boy and girl’s head were shaved and they were brought presented before the panchayat, they as well as their family members were beaten up badly. The badly injured couple were then too tied up together and thrown into the river.
On November 26th Chhattisgarh Sukma District Donpal Police had found the dead bodies of the couple. After investigation by the police the whole gruesome incident has come to light.
