Bhubaneswar, Sep 10:
Despite all indications that it was a case of suicide, commissionerate police is still probing the allegation that obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Swetapadma Mishra was driven to suicide by torture by her in laws for dowry.
Dr Swetapadma had jumped to death from the eight floor of the Banalata Apartment in Saheed Nagar area in the city on September 6.
“Though it seems to be a case of suicide judging by footage from CCTV cameras installed in the building and circumstantial evidence handed to us, investigation into the allegation of abetment to suicide made by the girl’s parents is still wide open,” Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said here today.
“We are verifying the documents submitted to us by Dr Arijit Mohapatra, the husband of Swetapadma, who had told the media that his wife was suffering from mental illness and was being treated for it by Dr Satyabrata Dash of Apollo Hospital,” said Bhoi. “We have already interrogated Dr Arijit and his colleagues. Things will become clear very soon,” he added.
Revealing the post-mortem reports of the deceased Swetapadma Mishra, the DCP said the cause of Dr Mishra’s death is shock and haemorrhage caused by multiple injuries due to hard and blunt fall.
“The post-mortem report indicates that the death has occurred due fall of the body from a great height. On hitting the ground hard, the body has received multiple injuries and shock resulting in brain haemorrhage,” Bhoi said.
