Bhubaneswar, Sept 3:
Defending champions Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) and Kalinga Vidyapitha posted fighting wins to book their berths in the quarterfinals of the 25th Kalinga Marine-Bibekananda Memorial (KMBM) Inter-School Football Tournament at Unit-VI Govt Boys’ High School ground here today.
Venkateswar English Medium School (VEMS) gave KISS a run for their money before going down 1-3 in penalty shoot out. After play in the regulation time ended in goalless draw, Sana Kumar Majhi, Rupei Majhi and Khageswar Hansda converted penalty kicks to clinch victory for KISS.
Subasish Pradhan was the only VEMS player to execute his spot kick successfully. However, VEMS found some consolation in the defeat as Laxmidhar Mallick was adjudged the man of the match.
The second pre-quarterfinal match of the day proved to be exciting as Kalinga Vidyapitha came from behind to edge out Vivekananda Sikhya Kendra 3-2.
After Suryakant Naik gave Vivekananda the lead in the 12th minute, Kalinga Vidyapitha struck thrice in space of five minutes to turn the course of the match.
Rajesh Kumar Bhoi spearheaded the Kalinga Vidyapitha fightback, scoring twice in the 38th and 43rd minute.
Prakash Nayak booted home the second goal for the winners in the 41st minute. Though Vivekananda reduced the margin through Siba Prasad Padhi’s goal in the 45th minute, their efforts to level the score did not succeed.
Padhi was named the man of the match.
In the next two pre-quarterfinal matches, Sai International School will meet DAV School, Unit-VIII and Delhi Public School will take on Sri Aurobinda Institute of Integral Education tomorrow.
