Delhi Public School (Kalinga) edged out Sri Aurobinda Institute of Integral Education (Khandagiri) 5-4 in a sudden death tie-breaker to advance to the quarterfinals of the 25th Kalinga Marine-Bibekananda Memorial (KMBM) Inter-School Football Tournament played at Unit-VI Govt Boys’ High School ground in Odisha’s capital city today.
Penalty shoot-out had to be resorted to after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw.
DPS forged ahead when their key centre-forward Dhyanendra Bhanjdeo scored in the 19th minute, cleverly chipping the ball over an advancing opposition goalkeeper. NA Narayan Rout equalised for Sri Aurobinda, tapping home off a flag kick in the 35th minute.
In the tie-breaker, both the teams began well with Dhyanendra Bhanjadeo and Narayan Rout converting the first spot kicks for DPS and Sri Aurobinda respectively. But stalemate continued as the next four kicks of both the sides were either saved or missed the target.
In the sudden death, teams were tied 2-2 with Shivam Ray, Agneyakar Mohapatra of DPS and Jagan Behera, Abhaya Naik of Sri Aurobinda making no mistake in converting respective kicks.
However, DPS clinched victory after Aditya Pradhan scored the winning goal.
Sri Aurobinda custodian Jagan Behera was adjudged the match for effecting two saves in the penalty shoot out and many more in the regulation time.
Earlier in the day, Sai International School made a free entry to the last-eight round after getting a walk-over against DAV School, Unit-VIII, who failed to turn up for their pre-quarterfinal match.
Tomorrow being a rest day, an exhibition match among physical education teachers of city schools will be held on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
