Cuttack, June 17:

The Odisha Police on Monday arrested a director of the Seven Hills Hospitals in Vishakhapatnam in connection with the kidney sale racket case.

According to reports, a special team of Mangalabag police arrested Dr N Prabhakar Babu, Director (Medical) of Seven Hills Hospitals on Monday. However, the team will have to wait for some days at Vishakhapatnam as Babu has been admitted to a private hospital there as he reportedly fell ill as soon as he was nabbed.

He would be brought back to Cuttack as soon as his health condition improves, said sources in the Commissionerate Police which has booked him under Transplantation of Human Organ Act.

The so-called kidney ‘donation’ by a woman from Cuttack and its transplantation was carried out in the Seven Hills hospital.

With Babu’s arrest, the total number of persons arrested in this case has gone up to six.

The five others who have been arrested earlier are Sharmistha Nayak and her husband Dilip Nayak, Niranjan Choudhury alias Nirakar, Jagabandhu Lenka and Niranjan Pradhan.

However, the mastermind and kingpin of the whole racket Biswaranjan Khatua continues to be at large.

It may be recalled that the modus operandi of the racket came to the fore when the police on June 1 took up the case of Namita Nayak who had given her kidney to Mohan Chandra Lenka of Bhubaneswar for Rs 10 lakh.

In course of investigation, police came to know that all documents were forged as the donor and the recipient were unrelated and the transplant was performed at the Seven Hills Hospital on April 3.
