The IIC of Kakatpur police station in Odisha’s Puri district was arrested on charges of misbehaving with a lady constable of the same police station, Puri SP Ashish Singh said today.
IIC Srikant Barik has been sent to jail after his bail petition was rejected by a local court today.
He was earlier shifted from the Kkatpur police station to the district police headquarters here as an immediate measure following the complaint lodged against him by the lady constable on Saturday.
While Jagannath Pradhan, ASP Puri has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the incident, the IIC of nearby Astaranga police station has been vested with the additional charge of Kakatpur police station.
According to the complaint lodged with the SP by the lady constable on Saturday evening, Barik had misbehaved with her earlier in the day.
Reports said basing on the lady constable’s complaint, the SP has taken the above mentioned steps as an immediate measure.
Puri ASP Jagannath Pradhan and lady Inspector Basanti Devi reached Kakatpur on Saturday and conducted an inquiry into the incident. The duo has interrogated the concerned lady constable in the course of their inquiry.
Strict confidentiality is being maintained in this inquiry.
Puri SP Asish Singh has said; “A lady inspector, along with the ASP, will conduct an inquiry into the incident and will submit a report. This report will be submitted to the DGP. The DGP will take action the report”.
Coming as it does barely two days after the DGP advised senior police officers to treat women, children and weaker sections of the society with greater sensitivity and empathy at the 58th Senior Police Officers’ Conference at Cuttack on Wednesday, the ncident at Kakatpur police station speaks of the state police’s attitude towards women, rued a civil society worker who preferred anonymity.
