Odisha headmaster arrested on sexual harassment charge

Baripada, Apr 6:

Schools in Odisha are fast becoming the most unsafe place for teenage girls. After a spate of cases of sexual harassment cases by teachers in schools across the state, the headmaster of a high school in Mayurbhanj district was arrested on the same charge today.

The accused headmaster Madhusudan Mahanta was arrested today based on complaint by parents of the victims. He has been booked on charges of intent to outrage the modesty of women and under section 10 of POCSO (Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, police said.

The arrest of Mahanta, however, came only after incensed parents and villagers blocked the Baripada-Udala road at Balijoda for around four hours from 10 am demanding his arrest, bringing vehicular movement to a halt.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, the police arrested the accused school headmaster. “We have arrested Madhusudan Mahanta under various sections of IPC based on complaints by the parents of the girls,” said SDPO, Betnoti, Dhiren Chandra Nanda.

Notably, the girls of the co-education high school at Gudialbandh under Badsahi police station limits had complained to their parents about Mahanta’s sexual advances.

The school has a 100-bed tribal girls’ hostel fully funded by the state government’s SC and ST Development department.

Earlier in the third week of March, the state government had told the House during the second phase of the Budget session that 117 cases of minor motherhood were reported till then.
