Cuttack, Nov 28:
The Odisha High Court Friday directed the state government to ensure adequate publicity on free treatment available to poor patients in private hospitals, which have availed land from government for free or at concessional rates.
According to the petitioner’s counsel Khirod Rout, a division bench comprising of Justices A K Rath and B R Sarangi, while adjudicating over a PIL, ordered that the notification issued by the state government in this regard in July be widely publicized.
Petitioner Rohan Mohanty had stated in his petition that despite a Supreme Court guideline of November 2011 for free treatment to a certain percentage of poor patients in private hospitals, the Odisha government was unaware of it till May this year.
The apex court had, in an earlier order, said that all private hospitals which have been allotted land by the state government either free or at concessional rates shall mandatorily provide free treatment to poor patients.
The apex court had ordered the number of such poor patients shall not be less than 25 per cent for outpatient department and 10 per cent for in-patients.
