Cuttack, Apr 14:
The Odisha High Court today granted three-week custody parole to gangster Raja Acharya, convicted in the judo coach Biranchi Das murder case, to attend his mother’s last rites.
The court allowed Acharya, who is serving life term at Jharpada Special Jail in Odisha capital, to go on parole till May 7 to participate in his mother’s last rites.
Notably, Raja’s mother, Nalini Acharya, passed away yesterday.
The gangster would be released from the jail tomorrow and the court has laid condition that he would be in police custody during the parole period.
It may be recalled that the judo coach was shot dead in Bhubaneswar on April 13, 2008 at his judo training centre premises by two unidentified armed men, who fled the scene on two-wheelers.
Raja, who was wanted in several cases of extortion, murder and kidnapping and was the main accused in the judo coach murder case surrendered before the Goa police at Panaji on May 5, 2008.
Prior to Raja’s surrender, his associate Chagala, a criminal from Cuttack dramatically appeared in the office of a private TV channel in Bhopal on April 22, 2008 and made a public confession of having killed Biranchi Das.
On August 1, 2009 charges were framed against Raja and his accomplice Chagala.
While the trial in the case began at a fast track court in Bhubaneswar in September 2009, the trial came to an end on November 21, 2009.
The fast track court on December 13, 2010 convicted Raja and Chagala for killing Biranchi Das.
Four days after the conviction, the court pronounced life imprisonment to Raja and Chagala on December 17, 2010.
Raja had allegedly killed Biranchi Das as he suspected the latter was providing protection to a model who turned down his one-sided love proposal.
