Bhubaneswar, Jun 19:
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch today arrested the former branch manager of the Ratei branch of Odisha Gramya Bank in Baleswar district on charges of misappropriating Rs 1.39 crore.
The accused, identified as Prasant Mohanty, in connivance with some other bank employees, had allegedly embezzled the aforesaid amount between 2006 and 2014.
Earlier, the investigating agency had arrested the office assistant-cum-cashier of the branch Subrat Kumar Piri in March this year.
“The accused misappropriated fixed deposits and diverted the money to 156 fake accounts. Later, he transferred the money to these accounts,” said an official of EOW.
The officials of headquarters of the bank located in Bhubaneswar came to know about the fraud during an internal audit last year.
“As employees of the bank were involved in the case, the bank failed to get a smell of the fraud forcing it to lodge a case with the EOW,” the officer said.
The EOW registered a case on December 22, 2014, based on the complaint of bank’s general manager (vigilance wing) Surendra Lenka.
