Acting on the forecast by the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) that the heat wave-like situation would prevail across Odisha for a week, the state government today directed the district collectors to take appropriate measures to meet the situation.
In a letter, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) GVG Sharma asked the district collectors to monitor the situation on a daily basis.
“The SRC has asked the collectors to ensure that the existing guidelines are followed in letter and spirit,” Deputy SRC Pravat Ranjan Mohapatra told the media.
He said the collectors have been asked to ensure uninterrupted supply of drinking water to the areas where there is acute scarcity of water and repair of all defunct tube wells and pipelines. Besides, the collectors have been advised to open charitable water distribution centres (jala chhatras) in all urban pockets.
“The SRC has also asked the collectors to make necessary arrangements in the hospitals for the treatment of heat-stroke patients and ensure that the passenger buses plying during the day time carry enough drinking water”, Mohapatra said.
Besides, the SRC has also instructed the collectors to ensure that no labourer is subjected to any kind of hard work between 11 AM to 3.30 PM during the scorching heat.
