The Odisha government today decided to open a special department to deal with the welfare, problems and issues of the physically challenged persons in the state.
The chief minister, while reviewing the implementation of various programmes for the physically challenged by the Women and Child Development department, asked the concerned authorities to open a special department, to be known as Social Welfare department, to handle the issues relating to the welfare of the physically challenged, old-age and other pensions- subjects that had earlier remained with the Women and Child Development department.
It was decided in the meeting that a District Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) would be opened in each district where the corrective surgery of the physically challenged persons would be conducted.
Presently, eight districts of the state have the DRCs.
It was also decided that in order to impart vocational training to the physically challenged, an Industrial Training Institute would be opened at Jatni in Khordha district.
The meeting also decided to provide a usable laptop with special software for the visually challenged.
Apart from this, encouragement of marriage among the physically challenged through incentives was also discussed at the meeting.
Among others, Women and Child Development minister Usha Devi, minister of state for Energy and IT, Pranab Prakash Das, Development Commissioner AP Padhi, secretary, Women and Child Development, Saswat Mishra and officials of the concerned departments were present at the meeting.
