Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Jun 8:

Agriculture Department of Odisha Government today asked all district collectors to make contingency plans for a possible drought situation after IMD forecast deficient rainfall in the state this year due to El-Nino effect.

Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy has cancelled the Raja holiday of all agriculture officials. Besides, he has also asked the district agriculture officers to facilitate sufficient amount of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to the farmers.

24-hour control rooms have been made operational in agriculture department offices of every district. These control rooms would record the rainfall, crop status and closely monitor the drought situation.

“We have sent letters to all the district collectors through the Chief Secretary to prepare contingency plans and submit it as soon as possible. We have also asked them to let us know if they need any help in ensure facilitation of seeds that require less water,” said Maharathy.

“We have asked the agriculture department officers to stay at the district headquarters and block offices. There would be no Raja holiday for the employees of my department,” he added.
