The Odisha government has issued a total of 11,856 licenses for country spirit and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) outlets /shops/ vends during the period 2009 to to end of 2013, a reply from the Excise department sought through RTI application said.
The RTI query by civil rights activist Pradip Pradhan to the Excise department has also revealed that the state has earned excise revenue of Rs 5,863.19 crore during the same period.
A sum of Rs 3979.05 crore out of the Rs 5,863.19 crore was deposited in advance with the state government by the Odisha State Beverages Corporation Ltd as Excise Duty/ Import Fee for sale of IMFL/beer/CS from 2009 to December 2013, said the reply.
However, the Excise Department preferred to remain silent on Pradhan’s query on whether any recommendations were made by any minister/MLA/ official for the grant of license in favour of any person/agency for opening of liquor shop/outlets, a release from the activist said.
