The Odisha government today condoled the sad and untimely demise of former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam.
Floral tributes were offered to the departed soul of the former President at the condolence meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the conference hall in the third floor of the state secretariat here today. Later two minutes of silence was observed in his memory.
Reading out from a statement the Chief Minister said, “I am deeply shocked at the sad demise of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He was one of the most illustrious presidents of the country, who was a visionary leader and a gifted scientist. He was instrumental in strengthening the country’s defence capabilities. Throughout his life, he lived only for the country. More than this, he was one of the finest human beings of our times. He inspired and guided millions of children to follow their dreams and explore their inherent talent. He has also written several inspiring books for children. He had a special relationship with Odisha and Biju Babu. He had visited our state several times as a scientist, as President and even after his presidency. He was always in the heart of the people of Odisha. He was a people’s president and a Karma Yogi in its truest meaning. In his death, India lost one of its noblest sons. May his soul rest in peace.”
Chief Minister Patnaik, members of his Cabinet, chief secretary, development commissioner, principal secretaries and secretaries of different departments attended the condolence meeting and paid homage to the former President.
A pall of gloom prevails in the state over Dr Kalam’s death. Schools, colleges and educational institutions in the state have been closed today as a mark of respect for the departed former President.
