Bhubaneswar, July 26:
A 20-year-old student of a leading engineering college in Odisha allegedly committed suicide in her college hostel here this evening.
However, the parents of the deceased girl has cried foul and blamed the college for the mishap.
The deceased, identified as Chinmayee Nayak, was a second year civil engineering student of the CV Raman College of Engineering and hailed from Padmapur village in Bhadrak district.
The police recovered the body of Chinmayee from her hostel room located inside the college campus, where she had been staying since her admission into the college.
The girl had hanged herself from the fan in her hostel room with her ‘chunni’ (scarf) while her room mates had gone to attend their classes, Tamando police sources said.
Though the exact reason behind the suicide is yet to be known, preliminary investigation by the police suggested that she could have taken the extreme step after failing to clear three papers in the just concluded semester, the results of which came out yesterday.
However, Bijay Nayak, father of the deceased, who rushed to the city after receiving information about his daughter’s death alleged that Chinmayee may have been murdered.
He said the college authorities had subjected her to mental torture over payment of college fees for quite some time.
Authorities of the CV Raman College have , however, denied the charge and said Chinmayee was never subjected to any pressure by them over payment of fees.
Reports said hostel mates reported the matter to the college authorities after Chinmayee did not respond to repeated knocks on her door today.
The college authorities, in turn, informed the police.
A police team rushed to the spot and broke open the door to find Chinmayee hanging from the ceiling fan and brought her down.
Later, her body was taken to the Capital Hospital for autopsy.
No suicide note was found from the spot, police said.
