Odisha fire consumes two of a family

In a tragic incident, a 60-year old man and his five year old grand daughter were charred to death in a devastating fire that engulfed their hut in Gunupur in Odisha’s Rayagada district today, official sources said.

At least 53 thatched houses were reduced to ashes in Tamilguda village under Gunupur sub-division in a fire that broke out while a high speed gale lashed the area, said Prasant Kumar Rath, sub-collector, Gunupur.

The deceased have been identified as K Kirudu (60) and his grand-daughter Sumitra (five), official sources said.

The Gunupur sub-collector said  families who have been rendered homeless, have been provided with polythene sheets, dry food and other relief materials as immediate measures. Arrangements have been made for serving cooked food for at least two days, he said.

Besides, ex-gratia would be provided to the next of kin of the deceased and the affected villagers as per the Relief Code , he said.
