Bhubaneswar, Jan 28:
Odisha farmers’ body Nabanirmana Krushak Sangathan (NKS) today said that it will hold a Sankalp samavesh on January 30 in Jagatsinghpur to highlight the police excesses on farmers during their December 14 convention in Bhubaneswar, and seeking price, prestige and pension.
Speaking to reporters today at Cuttack Gandhi Bhavan where the 27-day long Krushak Adhikar Yatra led by NKS Convenor Akshay Kumar reached today, Kumar said, “After a 23 day-long sit-in following the attempts made by government to disrupt the farmer’s convention back in December 14, we have started a Krushak Adhikar Yatra since January 3.”
“This yatra is aimed at organising the farmers at the grass-root level and create awareness among them about the government’s role in failing the convention where we intended to demand price, prestige and pension for farmers,” said Kumar.
“We will cross Cuttack and reach Jagatsinghpur tomorrow. A Sankalp samavesh will be held there on January 30 – the Martyrs’ Day. Representatives from several districts will come there and we will discuss the prevailing issues. As Gandhi used to say, people’s wish will become the beacon of politics,” he added.
It may be noted here that the farmers have long been demanding payment of compensation to the families of farmers that committed suicide, provision of Rs 5,000 pension for farmers, better procurement facilities, higher minimum support price, better social recognition and drought compensation among others.
