Bhubaneswar, Jan 31:

The state Excise Department today issued a notification regarding ban on liquor two days ahead of the voting for panchayat polls in Odisha.

State Excise Commissioner Prasanta Kumar Senapati has written to the District Collectors restricting sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages 48 hours before the beginning of three-tier panchayat polls in the state.

“There will be a ban on sale of all excise products 48 hours ahead of the panchayat polls till the following day. We will ensure that it is strictly followed for which mobile squads will conduct surprise raids,” said an Excise official.

The department is of the view that the poll aspirants might influence the voters by offering them alcohol. Hence, it has enforced a ban on liquor outlets including countrymade joints.
