Rayagada, Jan 3:
Even before the hullabaloo over the Angul cycle pump sterilization could die down comes report of a callous surgeon who cut up the oesophagus (food pipe) of the patient during a sterilization surgery in Rayagada district of Odisha.
The mishap took place at the Ramanaguda Community Health Center on December 27, 2014. The patient identified as Sarita Padhi of Limapadar village under Gunupur block of Rayagada district has been moved to the Manipal Hospital in Visakhapatnam where her condition continues to be critical.
Sarita, along with four others, visited the Ramanaguda Community Health Centre along with an ‘Asha Worker’ to get the surgery done. However, the doctor, while doing the surgery, erroneously slashed the food pipe following which she was shifted to the private hospital in vizag.
The incident created an uproar among the locals, who gheraoed the health centre and demanded strong action against the surgeon B Venkateswar Prusty. They also demanded that the Odisha government should take care of the treatment of the patient, following which Rs 45,000 was given from the Patients Welfare Association as assistance to Dibakar, the husband of the patient .
The Rayagada collector has ordered the CDMO to carry out an investigation and submit a report into this incident following a complaint lodegd by the family members of the victim.
The CDMO matched the callousness of the dcotor. Speaking to OST, CDMO Anand Kumar Padhi said, “The patient has been admitted to a private hospital instead of a government hospital tied up with us. We won’t be able to release funds in this case. However, we will inform the government and ensure facilitation of funds should the government desire so.”
Downplaying the fault of the doctor, the CDMO said, “We can only know the truth after Additional District Medical Office (ADMO) of Rayagada Shaktibrata Mohanty visits the Ramanaguda Community Health Centre tomorrow and submits the report.”
