Cuttack, Feb 29:
The SCB Medical College & Hospital (SCBMCH) authorities in Odisha’s Millennium city today suspended Dr Laxmidhar Das, head of the department (HOD) of Department of Anaesthesiology from his job on charges of sexual harassment of a first year post graduate girl student of the same department.
A first year PG student had levelled serious allegations of physical and mental torture against Dr Das.
The victim had reported the matter to the college authorities before lodging a formal complaint at the Mangalabag police station on February 23.
Dr Das was arrested on Friday after his interrogation by the police at the Mangalabag police station and forwarded to court. He was booked under sections 354, 354A and 354D of the IPC.
The HOD was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected by the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate court here on Friday.
On the other hand, Dr Das’s wife has called it a conspiracy and has said that the student has levelled the allegations against her husband at the instigation by some vested interest group.
Notably, the victim in her complaint has alleged that the Dr Das had been making advances towards her since September last year. He has been alleged to have asked her to accompany him for dinner and conferences outside the State.
Police recorded the statement of the student as well as some other witnesses in the incident. A pen drive containing recorded conversations between the accused and the reported victim on different occasions has also been handed over to the police by the latter as evidence.
Reportedly, the victim belongs to the Dalit community and is the daughter of a senior DMK leader who was two-time Minister of Puduchery.
