The Twin City Commissionerate Police today arrested and forwarded to court Dr Laxmidhar Das, the HOD of the department of Anaesthesia after interrogating him in the matter for nearly two hours at the Mangalabag police station here.

Dr Das was interrogated by ACP Sitaram Satpathy and IIC Mangalabag police station Arun Swain.

The police booked Dr Das under sections 354, 354 (A) and 354 (D) of the IPC, police sources revealed.

While the police preferred not to speak to the media on the matter, Dr Das told the media that he was innocent and has been framed at the instigation of some vested interest group.

A first year PG girl student of Anaesthesia department of the SCBMCH had levelled serious charges of sexual harassment and intimidation against Dr Das.

The victim, a Dalit student hailing from Puducherry had alleged that Dr Das had been subjecting her to sexual harassment for the last six months.

The victim had lodged an FIR at the Mangalabag police station after her mother arrived here on Wednesday. The police after registering the case had recorded her statement.

Earlier, the victim had written to the principal and superintendent of SCBMCH seeking action against Dr Das, sources revealed.

The victim is a daughter of a senior DMK leader and a former Minister of Puduchery, sources added.

Earlier in the day today, medicos of SCBMCH staged a protest rally inside the college campus demanding ouster and arrest of Dr Das.

Hundreds of students participated in the protest and threatened that they would intensify the agitation if stringent action is not taken against the accused.

Meanwhile, a complain committee formed as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court has started probing into the allegation of the victim.

The committee issued a notice to the PG student asking her to appear before it on Wednesday and record her statement following which statement of Dr Das will be recorded.
