Phulbani, Jul 18:
Odisha Crime Branch has started its investigation into the high-profile kidney sales issue in Kandhamal. A team of crime-branch officers led by SP Prasant Kumar Bhoi recently went to Phulbani to question the kidney donor Kanhu and his parents.
“The crime-branch has been investigating the case from various angles to understand how and under what circumstances Kanhu sold his kidney. The team recently brought him and his parents to Bhubaneswar for questioning and later released them. We are also questioning many others. However, we have not arrested anyone so far,” said crime-branch ADG Bijay Sharma.
The CB team is trying to explore the chain of events that led to the sale and trying to collect evidence of the same. It is looking at things such as dialysis at the private clinic in Bhubaneswar, consultation regarding kidney transplant, contact with the Sri Lanka based nursing home etc.
Kanhu, a dalit young man of Phulani district, sold his kidney to Mahendra Patnaik of Brahmapur. He was taken to Chennai from Phulbani via Bhubaneswar and then to Sri Lanka by air for the transplant.
The young man admitted to have sold the kidney because of poverty after the incident came to fore following which the district administration ordered an investigation by the deputy collector and the SDPO. District Collector Yamini Sarangi had submitted the investigation report to the State Government on June 1 following which the Health Secretary and Minister handed over the investigation to the crime-branch.
